Teviot Action Group Organisation

The Teviot Action Group is a charitable voluntary organisation established in 1998 to offer the community ways of moving forward and changing the quality of life, reducing poverty, decreasing crime, racial tension and regenerating the Teviot Estate.

The organisation is one of it’s kind, offering to build trust and confidence in the community with over 100 volunteers and staff. The Teviot Action Group did some research at grass root level looking into the individual’s needs and profile basic skills were one of the highest priorities along with stress, debt and poverty all as important as one another.

The first steps were to find a resource that would be local people, those with grass root knowledge and with an understanding of communities needs and priorities but at the same time building a place of self-ownership where people wanted to live and work further their education, or just be a part of society. The accreditation program that The Teviot Action Group developed is called Trust and Confidence with a mission statement Together We Can Make it Happen which has a unit of education, health employment, and financial independence.

What’s The Outcome?
Since the first week of the organisation being set up with very small resources, the organisation went from strength to strength building activities for all ages. Homework Club, Mother Tongue Classes, Sewing, Literacy, numeracy Basic Skills, Sports, Football, Karate, Advice and Guidance, Job Hub and other skills all run by residences, many whom could not at one time read and write or communicate with others.

Today they hold a wealth of qualifications, NVQ’s, City and Guilds in Child Care Management, Catering, Administration, Sports and much more. Lobbying for a bus to serve the isolated estate was a success and the 309 bus is in great demand and used by all the residents especially the School Children and Elders and it doesn‘t stop there, Health, Environment, Regeneration, Education, Housing.
Enterprise is a way forward, it is a priority and it is The Teviot Action Groups mission to consult and work in partnership with all agencies to benefit the local people. The Teviot Action Group has representation on most boards and is recognised by the local authority and other agencies with commendations from the London Mayor, Ken Livingstone, Civic award from the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, for Outstanding Contribution To The Community.
